New Light House, Pondicherry


The 19th Century Light House is a tourist attraction in it. The Old Light House, Pondicherry was made by French rulers which are now replaced by New Light House, Pondicherry which is constructed by the government of India. Here are a few important and must-know pieces of information-

How to reach there


There are few ways to reach to the New Light House, Pondicherry out of which the most common is via renting scooty or bike. One can take a cab as well to the Light House. The approximate distance of New Light House, Pondicherry from Pondicherry Bus Stand is around 4 km.


History


Before the construction of Light House, the only landmark for mariners travelling around the globe was the Red Hills, 3kms west of the main town. To provide the visitors the right sight, the French rulers planned to build the Light House. In March 1836 the old lighthouse was erected under the guidance of L. Guerre. After being into existence for years, in 1979 it was discontinued. the same year came the present Lighthouse which is one of the most visited attractions in Pondicherry. The 157 ft high tower is a host to several cultural events, music fests, and commercial activities.

The French Riviera of the East, Pondicherry(Pondy) has two lighthouses, an old one and a new one. When the former has been closed for public appearance the latter serves as the spot for giving its visitors the most amazing view of the city and panoramic view of the beach.


Visitor Duration


The lighthouse is about 157 ft tall, and to full excursion of its premises, we would suggest you to take 1-2 hours.


Timing


The lighthouse is not open always, it will open at 3pm every day and closes by 7pm every day. It is quite scenic during sunsets.


Pros

  • Sunset- The sunset is a lifetime of an experience to watch from the top of the Light House.
  • Architecture- The New Light House is a hexagonal tower with balcony and lantern.
  • Pattern- The Old Light House had a green lantern dome while the current has a tower with white and black bands.


Cons

  • Stairs- The height of the Light House is around 157 ft and since there is no lift, one has to climb there way up which might not be possible for everyone.
  • Time- Once you step in the tower, there will be a certain time period in which you can be inside.

  • Carry a water bottle- The Light House is quite tall, one will need water to climb there way up to the tower.
  • Sunset- Try going around sunset to experience some beautiful shots.

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore (VITM), a constituent unit of National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, was established in memory of Bharat Ratna Sir M.
