Doddabetta Peak, Ooty
Doddabetta is the highest mountain peak in Southern India and the Nilgiri Mountains with its peak standing at 8,650-feet (2,637-meters) above sea level. There is a reserved forest area around the peak. It is 9 km from Ooty, on the Ooty-Kotagiri Road in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu, India. It is a popular tourist attraction with road access to the summit. Its closest competitors are Chamundi Peak to the north and Kattadadu further west. How to reach there
The peak is located at a distance of around 10 km from the Ooty City area. There are few ways to reach the peak. One of the common ways is to take a travel agency bus. Several travel agencies in and around Ooty provides bus services to Doddabetta Peak. Another way to reach is by taking an auto rickshaw from Ooty Bus Stand which will take around 30 mins.
The Specialty of the Peak
- Flora- The slopes of the peak are covered with thick shola thickets. Shola is a unique type of tropical montane forests that grows on higher mountain regions. These broad-leaved forests interspersed with montane grasslands are a retreat to the eyes of the visitors.
- Birds- On your way to the peak, you can spot an enormous number of birds of different varieties.
- Museums- One can spot many teas as well as chocolate museums on the slope. Also, there are vast lands for tea cultivation in the slope.
- Dodobetta Trekking- The most idyllic place for the outdoor activity of trekking, it allures avid trekkers in abundance. As you traverse up the rugged winding paths of the mountain you would be welcomed by the open fields and followed by long coarse grass.
- Vegetation Variety- The entire peak is filled with a large variety of vegetation including several medicinal herbs and rhododendron trees. Rhododendron flower is an edible plant which is used for making traditional medicines, herbal tea such as the “Labrador Tea”, etc.
- Lush Greenery- The Doddabetta Peak is the highest peak in the Nilgiris, and is surrounded by a reserved forest and lush greenery. Also, this peak provides a very good view of the surrounding valleys and hills including the “Chamundi Hills”.
- Telescope Tower- There is an octagonal-shaped telescope tower that rises out of the middle of the peak. This indoor platform has several telescopes that you can use in order to make the best of the breathtaking panoramic views. The telescope services are unfolded for the public only on a clear sky day.

Near the Telescope House, there are a variety of boards in every direction to give an idea of what we are looking in front of us. The eternal beauty of the land makes it memorable for a prolonged period. One can spot Mysore plains, Coimbatore plains, Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, Kotagiri, etc from the peak.

- Carry water bottles- On the way to the peak, you have to climb over stones. We would advise people to carry water bottles. If forgotten, there are a few shops where you can purchase water bottles.
- Avoid going on weekends- To avoid the crowd of holiday-makers on weekends, we would advise people to visit this place on weekdays.
- Go in the morning- Try to go in the early morning so you can enjoy an awesome sunrise.
- Target a clear sky day- If have an option, keep this destination for a clear sky day for the best experience. The view from the peak isn't meant for a cloudy day!
