South India is not only famous for it's temples which is made in Chola Dynasty, but also famous for the few truely magnificent palaces. These include Mysore Palace, Bangalore Palace etc.
Bangalore Palace, built in April 1878, is a palace located in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The Bangalore Palace was the private residence of the Royal Wodeyar family. Built to resemble Windsor Castle, this quirky palace is filled with an interesting and eclectic collection of art and paraphernalia from a bygone era. The palace grounds are a popular venue for rock concerts and other music events. It is an epitome of great architecture and beauty, The majestic Bangalore Palace preserves in it the spice of old regal opulence. Here are few important and must know pieces of information-

How to reach there


The Palace enjoys the central location in the city of Bangalore. It lies in the Vasanth Nagar area near Mount Carmel Institute of Management. A few ways to reach the palace include taking BMTC bus from bus terminal to the Bangalore Palace. Other ways include booking a private cab or taking auto rickshaw to the reach the palace. Bangalore city has facility of cab services like Uber and Ola which can be utilised for a comfortable travel.


History


The area where the palace now stands originally belonged to a school principal of the cantonment town, Reverend J Garrett, it was purchased in 1873 by the guardians of Chamaraja Wadiyar using his personal funds at a cost of Rs. 40,000  and construction began in 1874. John Cameron, the person behind Lalbagh was enrolled for the landscaping of the palace and surrounding areas. Initial construction was completed in 1878 and subsequent additions and renovations have been carried out since. Many additions and improvements were carried out in subsequent years. In the later years, Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added some portions outside of Durbar Hall e.g. the twin external staircase and platform for musicians.


Visitor Duration


The Bangalore Palace is spread in around 454 acres (including garden) and to full excursion of its premises, we would suggest you to consider almost 3-4 hours.


Sections in the Palace


Bangalore Palace is divided in few sections-
  • Ground Floor- The ground floor consists of an open courtyard containing granite seats covered with fluorescentblue ceramic tiles. It also contains a ballroom for holding private parties.
  • First Floor- The first floor, containing an elaborate hall known as the Durbar Hall, can be reached by climbing a decorated staircase. This is a sprawling hall where the king used to address the assembly.
  • Ground- The sprawling grounds surrounding the palace used to be used for holding public events including music concerts.


Architecture


The palace complex, including the gardens, is spread over 454 acres, of which the palace has a floor area of 45,000 sq. ft. he furniture has a touch of Victorian, neo-classical and Edwardian styles. The interior of the palace is magnificently decorated with floral motifs, cornices and wood carvings. The ceiling is ornamented with relief paintings. There are 35 rooms in the palace, along with a manual lift. Wooden fans from General Electric and imported stained mirrors and glass are also used.


Pros


  • Education Trip- The Mysore Palace is now converted as museum that treasures like souvenirs, paintings, jewelery, royal costumes and other items, which were once possessed by the Wodeyars.
  • Architecture- The Tudor-style architecture is eminent from the turrets, the battlements on the fortified towers is one of the must visit in Bangalore Palace.
  • Audio tour available- An audio tape is available inside the Palace, in a number of languages including Hindi and English to help visitors understand its history better.
  • Phones allowed- One can take phone inside the premises of the palace. Though camera is allowed on a chargeable basis.
  • Charming Interior- There is a large collection of photographs that chronicle the different generations of the Wadiyar dynasty along with offering a glimpse into the evolution of Bangalore over the last century.


Cons


  • Not advisable during afternoon- It can get very hot in the afternoon and you wont be able to enjoy a walk in the Royal Palace Garden.
  • Not all parts of palace are open for visit- Do not wander off yourselves. Only certain parts of the palace are open to the public.

Nirvana Tips


  • Carry water bottles- As the premise is too, we would advise you take water bottles along with you.
  • Avoid going on weekends- To avoid crowd of holiday-makers on weekends, we would advise you to visit this palace on weekdays.
