Botanical Garden, Ooty




Also known as 'Government Garden', it lies in the lower Doddabeta Peak. The garden has a terraced layout which is managed by Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. The garden is divided into many sections, where each section showcases different varieties of plants. The garden has around thousand species, both exotic and indigenous, of plants, tree, shrubs, ferns, herbal and bonsai plants. Here are a few important and must know pieces of information-

How to reach there

There are few ways to reach to the Botanical Garden. You can either take a local bus or an auto-rickshaw from Ooty Bus Stand to the Botanical Garden. It takes 20 minutes to travel from Ooty Bus Stand. Approximate driving distance between Ooty Bus Stand and Botanical Garden Ooty is 17 km which can be covered with a two-wheeler also if you have rented one.




The specialty of the garden


• Varieties of plants- There are many species of the plants which include the perennial flower which was laid out by Italian prisoners of World War I, who were shifted to Ooty. These plants are found in the lower lawn area of the garden.

• Nurseries- The nurseries are about 300 feet above the lower lawn of the garden, consists of eight glass houses. The terrace of the nurseries is properly utilized for growing plants via cut flowers, seeds and also for trial purposes.

• Fossil Tree Trunk- The Fossil Tree Trunk is 200 million years old. Trees carried by rivers and deposited in inland lakes were transformed with the replacement of the woody matter by silica give rise to fossil tree trunks.

• Toda Mund- Toda Mund is the famous Toda hill in the garden. This place gives the visitor an insight into the lives of the original tribes of Ooty called Toda.

The Botanical Garden is spread in around 55 acres and to have a full excursion of its premises, we would suggest you not less than 3 hours.


Pros

• Educational trip- The Botanical Garden is perfectly appropriate for any educational trip. Because of its different collections of herbs, plants, etc., the garden gives a perfect example for different trials by the gardener and inter-mixing of different species.

• Rose Garden Area- The Botanical Garden has a specific area where all different types of roses are grown. The sight and the smell of blooming roses make the Rose Garden stand out.

• Nilgiri Birds- The Botanical Garden is famous not only for the plants but also for the brightly-colored native Nilgiri birds perched on tree branches or flying around.

• Sufficient Area for Picnic- The well maintained and soft grassy lawns are the perfect spot for the picnic. There are a few on-campus shops where you can purchase refreshments and snacks.

Cons

• Don't touch all plants- Not all flowers in the garden are soft. There are few plants in the garden which are infectious. Read the boards carefully before touching flowers.


Nirvana Travel Tips

• Carry water bottles- The Botanical Garden covers an area of 55 acres which includes hills. We would advise people to carry water bottles. If forgotten, there are few on-campus shops where you can purchase water bottles.

• Avoid going on weekends- To avoid the crowd of holiday-makers on weekends, we would advise people to visit this garden on weekdays.
